Chaudhary's son Raghu (Anirudh Dave) falls in love with a Muslim girl named Zainab (Suha Gezen) in college. Both love each other although Zainab is engaged to Saleem (Hiten Tejwani), a boy from her community. After threats from Saleem, Raghu starts evading her. Zainab forcefully invites Raghu to talk to her and their situation quickly escalates. Raghu is murdered with the help of Saleem, an act that sparks communal riots.

On the plus side, the 132-minute movie has strong performances from most of its cast, especially Ashutosh Rana, whose subtle and winning turn is a welcome break from his screechy characterisations in the past, and Hiten Tejwani.
The movie opens by expressing its gratitude to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Singh Yadav, whose poor leadership during the Muzaffarnagar riots seems to have been forgotten by the filmmakers. The speech by the screen CM (Sanjay Suri), named Mithilesh Singh Yadav for good measure, about maintaining law and order at all costs, is a barely disguised plug for an entertainment tax concession. Shorgul might upset Hindu and Muslim leaders in Uttar Pradesh, but its chief minister will be most pleased at his depiction as the embodiment of good governance.
A thought-provoking movie based ostensibly on the Muzaffarnagar communal riots of 2013, it shows that no matter what religion or caste one belongs to, it's a mammoth task to stand firm in one's beliefs, and that the majority of people are always swept away into a mob mentality and hence, lose their identity. It also shows that people tend to use religion for their own personal gains.
Controversial BJP leader Sangeet Som from Uttar Pradesh has demanded a ban on the screening of the riot-themed movie in certain parts of that state saying that its contents could disturb the social harmony and create communal tension.
